Ever dreamt of cycling through vibrant Colombian towns, past lush coffee plantations, and up mountains that challenge even the pros? Well, buckle up because this 9-day Colombian cycling trip is about to give you serious #bikepacking goals!
Medellin: Gateway to Adventure
We start our adventure in Medellin, Colombia’s second-largest city, but instead of the bustling streets, we head to a charming town called El Retiro. Nestled amidst gorgeous mountains at a cool 8,200 feet above sea level, El Retiro is the perfect place to acclimatize. Here, we’ll get our legs warmed up with scenic rides and Colombian cycling tips – those legendary climbs they call “Repechos” will become a badge of honor! El Retiro itself is a gem, known for its traditional wooden architecture and a thriving community of artisans. Be sure to explore the Parque Municipal El Retiro, a haven of tranquility with walking paths, gardens, and stunning views.
Day Trips and Hidden Gems
Our explorations take us beyond El Retiro. One day, we’ll cycle to Guatapé, a town bordering a massive reservoir. Keep an eye out for the gigantic Piedra del Peñol rock – you can even climb its 659 steps for epic views (and bragging rights). We’ll also explore Medellin itself, a city that’s transformed itself into a symbol of innovation. Take a bike ride through the city’s bustling streets, feeling the energy of a metropolis reborn. Get a taste of its electrifying nightlife in the famous “pink zone,” and learn how Medellin earned its title as the most innovative city in the world. A visit to Medellin wouldn’t be complete without experiencing the Metrocable, a unique gondola lift system that connects hillside neighborhoods to the city center, offering breathtaking panoramic views.
Colombia’s Diverse Landscape
But Colombia isn’t just about cities! The second half of our trip takes us deep into Antioquia’s breathtaking coffee region. Imagine cycling with the majestic “Cerro Tusa” mountain, the one from the Juan Valdez coffee logo, as your constant companion. This unique, pyramid-shaped mountain was once a sacred site for indigenous people. We’ll cross the mighty Cauca River, a vital artery for Colombia, and witness diverse plant and animal life along the way. Finally, we’ll arrive at those emerald green coffee plantations – pure bliss for any coffee enthusiast! Here, we’ll have the opportunity to visit a working finca (coffee farm) and learn about the entire coffee-making process, from bean to cup. Savor a cup of freshly brewed Colombian coffee, arguably some of the best in the world, while breathing in the crisp mountain air.
The Challenge and the Reward
No Colombian cycling adventure is complete without a challenge, and ours is a doozy – a 23km climb nicknamed “Colombia’s Mont Ventoux” after the legendary climb in France! But the reward? Reaching a picture-perfect village known as the “most beautiful” in Antioquia. Here, we’ll soak up the local charm, savor the views, and enjoy the warm hospitality of the Colombian people. Explore cobblestone streets lined with colorful colonial buildings, visit a traditional market overflowing with fresh produce and local crafts, and perhaps even try your hand at making your own “arepas,” a staple of Colombian cuisine.
Beyond the Itinerary: Exploring Antioquia by Bike
Our meticulously planned route offers just a taste of what Antioquia has to offer cyclists. Beyond our itinerary, Antioquia boasts over 4,000 kilometers of mapped cycling routes! This network caters to all ability levels, with options for both road and mountain biking enthusiasts.
For history buffs, there are routes that wind through charming colonial towns like Santa Fe de Antioquia, the oldest town in Antioquia, where time seems to have stood still. Explore preserved colonial architecture, including churches, plazas, and traditional homes with characteristic balconies. Nature lovers can explore the breathtaking scenery of “Embalse Riogrande” reservoir, a haven for birdwatchers and kayakers, or “Parque Arvi” National Park, a cloud forest haven teeming with biodiversity. Here, you can cycle through lush forests, hike to waterfalls, and spot a variety of exotic birds and wildlife.
A Celebration of Cycling and Colombian Culture
After conquering mountains and soaking up the coffee culture, we’ll head back to Medellin for a final celebration. Get ready for delicious Colombian cuisine, from fresh seafood on the Caribbean coast to hearty stews in the mountains, all enjoyed with breathtaking scenery. This trip is a chance to bond with fellow cycling enthusiasts over shared experiences, swapping stories and creating lasting memories. Perhaps you’ll even want to extend your stay and explore more of Colombia’s vibrant culture. Here are some ideas:
- Salsa under the stars: Immerse yourself in Medellin’s energetic nightlife with a salsa lesson in a local bar. Learn the basic steps, feel the rhythm, and maybe even show off your newfound skills on the dance floor.
- Learn about Colombian emeralds: Take a trip to the “Emerald Triangle” west of Bogota, a region famous for its emerald mines. Visit a mine and learn about the fascinating process of emerald extraction, or browse the shops in the town of Muzo and find a unique Colombian emerald to take home as a souvenir.
- Snorkel the Rosario Islands: If your trip coincides with some free time after Medellin, head north to Cartagena on the Caribbean coast. From there, you can take a boat trip to the Rosario Islands, a stunning archipelago renowned for its crystal-clear waters and coral reefs. Explore the underwater world with a snorkeling or scuba diving excursion.
- Volunteer in a local community: Give back to the Colombian community by volunteering your time at a local project. Options might include working with children in an after-school program, helping with environmental conservation efforts, or assisting with community development initiatives.
This 9-day Colombian cycling trip is more than just a ride – it’s a cultural immersion, a physical challenge, and an unforgettable adventure that will leave you with epic memories (and maybe some sore legs!). But Colombia has so much more to offer. So, come explore the diverse landscapes, vibrant cities, and warm hospitality of this incredible South American country. ¡Buen viaje! (Have a good trip!)
