main tunnel entrance outside of Medellin

In August 2024, construction began on the second phase of the Tunnel de Oriente project, an 8.2 km (5.1 miles) long tunnel connecting Medellín with the José María Córdova International Airport in Rionegro. The project, which was originally inaugurated on August 15, 2019, is currently undergoing expansion to accommodate for the growing traffic between Medellin and Eastern Antioquia. Here’s a quick report on the progress of the project.

Tunnel de Oriente – Phase 2: How it is Going So Far

The second phase of the project, which was originally scheduled for 2025, started in August of 2024 and is estimated to take three to four years to complete. This new tunnel project is designed to expand the Tunnel de Oriente by

  • developing approximately 5.3 km of viaducts and open-air roads to improve the tunnel’s flow and connectivity,
  • constructing a second Seminario tunnel and a new Jose Maria Cordova Airport Interchange
  • completing the Santa Elena 2 tunnel and
  • expanding the tunnel’s access to Loreto Road.

Since its commencement last year, the project has been progressing at a steady pace. The Jose Maria Cordova Airport Interchange, one of the biggest parts of this project, is already over 65% complete and is expected to be finished in mid-to-late 2025. For the rest of the project, specific completion percentages haven’t been made publicly available; experts, however, estimate that the project will be completed within the allocated time frame.

The End Goal

Once completed, the expanded Tunnel de Oriente is expected to significantly reduce travel time between Medellin and Eastern Antioquia, improve traffic flow through the tunnel, and alleviate congestion on existing routes. The resulting improved connectivity between Medellin and Rionegro is expected to boost regional economic growth and improve infrastructure development in the region.

What Does this Mean for Tourists?

For tourists looking to visit Medellin, the expansion of Runnel de Oriente will mean faster, easier, and more convenient travel via private driver from Medellin to Rioegro and back. This improved connectivity means access to even more tourist destinations from Medellin. The new tunnel project would improve access to the Eastern Antioquia region, leading to less travel time between the two regions and more time making new memories.
