Let’s be honest, who hasn’t dreamt of hopping in a van and setting off on an epic adventure with their best friends? Well, we finally did it, and we chose Medellin, Colombia, as the backdrop for our adventure! Exploring the beautiful city and the stunning landscapes of Antioquia with a private driver and van was the absolute best decision. It gave us the freedom to explore at our own pace, dive deep into local culture, and create memories that will last a lifetime. But before you pack your bags and hit the road, check out these 10 things we learned along the way – they might just save you some headaches and make you have a lot more fun!
First off, choosing the right van and driver is crucial. We were a group of six, with a mix of backpackers and those who preferred to travel with a few more comforts. This meant finding a van with plenty of space for everyone and their luggage was a top priority. We lucked out with a spacious van that had comfy seats, individual charging ports (a lifesaver for our social media addicts!), and even WiFi – essential for staying connected and sharing our adventures on the go. But the real MVP was our driver, Deimer. We found him through Medellin Tours, and he turned out to be a true gem. Not only was he an expert navigator, but he was also incredibly knowledgeable about the region, its history, and hidden gems.
With our awesome wheels secured, it was time to map out our adventure. We knew we had to hit up Guatapé, the town famous for its vibrant zócalos (colorful house facades) and the breathtaking views from El Peñol rock. Jardín, a charming coffee town nestled in the mountains, was also a must-visit. But we didn’t want to over-plan, so we kept our itinerary flexible, leaving room for spontaneous detours and recommendations from Deimer. He suggested some incredible off-the-beaten-path spots, like a secluded waterfall perfect for a refreshing dip and a local market where we feasted on delicious arepas and fresh fruit juices. Pro tip: do a little research on local events and festivals happening during your trip. We stumbled upon a vibrant music festival in a small town and ended up dancing the night away with locals!
Speaking of Deimer, he was more than just a driver; he was our local expert and cultural ambassador. He knew all the best places to eat, from hole-in-the-wall eateries serving authentic Colombian cuisine to charming cafes with stunning views. He even gave us the inside scoop on local customs and traditions, helping us navigate cultural nuances with ease. One afternoon, he surprised us with a detour to a panoramic viewpoint overlooking the Andes mountains, where we watched the sunset paint the sky in a kaleidoscope of colors. It was a moment we’ll never forget!
While having a plan is helpful, we also learned to embrace the unexpected. One morning, Deimer mentioned a nearby paragliding spot, and a few of us, fueled by a mix of adrenaline and Colombian coffee, decided to seize the moment. Soaring above the lush green valleys was an exhilarating experience and a definite highlight of our trip. Having a driver gives you that freedom to say “yes” to spontaneous adventures that pop up along the way.
Of course, when you’re in a new country, it’s important to be respectful of the local culture. We brushed up on our basic Spanish phrases and made an effort to learn about Colombian customs and traditions. A little respect goes a long way, and it made our interactions with locals even more meaningful and enjoyable.
Even though we had Deimer taking care of the driving, we still had to work together as a group. We took turns choosing the music, shared snacks and stories, and made sure everyone felt included in decisions. It’s amazing how a shared adventure can strengthen friendships and create lasting bonds. And with no one stressing about navigating unfamiliar roads or finding parking, we could truly relax, soak in the scenery, and enjoy each other’s company. We played games, sang along to our favorite tunes, and laughed until our sides ached.
By the end of our trip, we felt like seasoned travelers, navigating the ins and outs of group travel like pros. We learned that tipping is customary in Colombia, and we made sure to express our gratitude to Deimer for his exceptional service and for making our trip so special. We also kept safety in mind, keeping our valuables secure and staying aware of our surroundings.
Looking back, renting a van with a driver was hands down the best decision we made. It allowed us to experience the beauty and diversity of Medellin and Antioquia in a way that wouldn’t have been possible otherwise.
