My girlfriend and I wanted to get out of the hustle and bustle of Medellin for the weekend and decided to take a glamping trip to Guatape for the night.
The Options for the Trip from Medellin to Guatape
If you go to Guatape from Medellin by bus, it takes about 3 hours. By private car and with normal traffic it’s closer to 2-hours.
The drive to Guatape goes through a couple of small towns and then the scenery starts to become incredible. Rolling green hills, gardens and flower farms, unique homes and beautiful landscapes. We went by private car so we could keep our eyes on the scenery and not on the road.
Entering Guatape
After about 30 minutes of amazing scenery, you will cross the bridge and enter Guatape.
Immediately, you’ll start to see the small town colonial lifestyle. The colors are going to start popping out with beautiful artistry in every direction you look. There are traditional painted carvings along the walls of homes and small stores throughout the entire town.
Years ago these traditional painted carvings were used to signify what that building offered. For example a doctor’s office may have medical related carvings and painted woodwork decorating the lower half of the building.
We Finally Arrived at our Glamping Location
Unfortunately we got a late start from Medellin and didn’t arrive to our first Guatape glamping location until around 8pm. Luckily the restaurant was open until 9.
We were greeted with glasses of absolutely delicious courtesy champagne. They informed us that this champagne is made specifically for this glamping resort, which we thought was pretty unique and cool.
The restaurant closes at 9pm but breakfast starts at eight am. We placed an order at the restaurant and it was brought to our glamping location along with some amazing drinks.
We ordered the burger, empanadas, a salad and the tenderloin medallions. It was delivered to the table on our deck of our beautiful glamping location and the food was absolutely delicious.
The salad was great – the combination of perfectly crisp bacon and juicy chicken mixed with parmesan made it a delight. The burger was cooked perfectly and the fries were great also.
The tenderloin was good but not the best I’ve ever had. I’d get it three of five stars normally but since it was a secluded glamping location in Guatape and it was delivered by foot, I’d have to crank it up to at least 4 stars. The quinoa risotto that came with the tenderloin was absolutely delicious.
I ordered a michelada with Sol, a Mexican beer which happens to be my favorite beer so that was a pleasant surprise.
Hot Tub and Relaxation Time
Shortly after dinner we hung out on the deck overlooking the lake.. meanwhile we let the hot tub fill up and turned on some music.
We had a couple of beers and made a couple of cocktails from the bar that was included at our glamping location. We were both exhausted and it was an early night for us.
The Next Day Glamping in Guatape
We woke up around eight o’clock AM and just had to call our host to order breakfast. We both connected to the Wi-Fi so that we could take care of some work and last minute planning before we checked out at noon or so and headed into tour Guatape.
The breakfast was surprisingly good. We ordered a delicious cheese sandwich, sausage, perfectly cooked eggs, some amazing Oatmeal pancakes with greek yogurt in redberry sauce, fresh fruit (Pina and papalla). To top it all off it even came with freshly squeezed orange juice.
Honestly both of us would Rate our breakfasts an eight out of ten. The three breakfast options were the poached eggs, the oatmeal pancakes, and basically a grilled cheese with eggs and sausage and fresh fruit. The dinner was much more impressive.
Time to Shower up and Head into Guatape
We requested fresh towels in the morning so we could shower before we took off to explore Guatape. Of course our host quickly brought them to us and we hopped in the huge shower which is even big enough for 2 people.
The WiFi was a 10 of 10 but there were only a few locations that had their own Wifi connection so it’s recommended to check ahead of time if it’s necessary.
From our glamping location It only takes about 20 minutes to get into Guatape by Tuk Tuk. We rented a boat and a jetski and spent a couple of hours touring the lake.
After we had enough fun on the water, we enjoyed a delicious dinner across the street from the Marina and relaxed before the 90 minute drive back to Medellin.
We had a blast and for the price point we think the value was definitely worth it.
